You Can Be Skinny AND Strong

Posted by Dior Co on Monday, February 24, 2014,
When I read today's Women's Health online article about women being bashed for being too skinny, I didn't know if I should discuss it here in my beauty blog or in my Tumblr personal blog. But since health is also under the beauty category (who can be beautiful without being healthy??), I decided this blog is the right platform.

In the said article, Actress Gal Gadot has been getting a lot of flack for being "too skinny" to play Wonder Woman in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman. I have my own s...

Is Stress Making You Ugly?

Posted by Dior Co on Monday, July 29, 2013, In : Tips
While some of our best work and best decisions are accomplished under pressure, our looks may suffer because of it. Whether it stems from big-picture issues like constant work overload or money trouble, or from tiny daily hassles like getting stuck behind a slow truck, we all can experience the gnarly toll that stress can take on your looks.

It’s a topic that Dr. Amy Wechsler explores in her book, The Mind-Beauty Connection. According to Wechsler, stress is “the root of all evils today,...

Suspension x Circuit Training

Posted by Dior Co on Monday, November 12, 2012, In : Reviews
Another workout I've tried recently is Suspension Training, TRX being the most popular one around. Suspension training refers to an approach to fitness training that uses a system of ropes and webbing called a "suspension trainer" to allow the user to work against their own body weight.

So there I was looking up at the ropes hanging from horizontal ceiling poles in the studio, both excited and nervous, as I always am every time I try a new workout. I've already tried circuit training, but susp...

Completing the Circuit

Posted by Dior Co on Tuesday, November 6, 2012, In : Reviews
When I got an invite from my friend, who almost all her life was sedentary, to try circuit training, how can I say no? Aside from the fact that it's the one exercise that made her want to exercise, I've been wanting to change up my fitness routine for days now.

Circuit training is a great way to combine cardio and strength if you're short on time. The workout usually consists of simultaneous strength and cardio exercises that are completed one right after the other, with little or no rest in b...

Studio 116 Dance School

Posted by Dior Co on Tuesday, October 23, 2012, In : Reviews
I HATE CARDIO. For someone who's trying to be as fit as she can be, it might come as a surprise that I HATE CARDIO. I can't emphasize that more. Studies say that women are more inclined to enjoy cardiovascular exercises more than strength training, but not me. I like the feeling that I can lift weights and increase intensity rather than sweat all my fat out in a workout. However, after two years of body conditioning and doing purely strength training and meditation, I knew it was about time I...

Let's Move, Let's Love!

Posted by Dior Co on Friday, September 28, 2012, In : Reviews
Who wouldn’t be excited to an invite to join a Zumba party? Let alone another Benetton fragrance launch?

Last week, the press and bloggers had a privilege to workout for a good half hour c/o Studio 116 in partnership with Benetton Philippines. Not only did we dance “Gangnam style” for Zumba, we were also able to try out Swing, Salsa and the newest fitness dance craze Shiba! (More on these this month after I pay a visit to their studio and try out more of their fitness and social dance ...

Q&A: Bulking Up Before Slimming Down

Posted by Dior Co on Monday, February 20, 2012, In : Tips
Q: Hi Dior, Like you, I did Barre3 and Plana Forma. I stopped immediately though because after a month of doing it, my jeans got tighter. I really felt that I bulked up. Shouldn't the workout suppose to slim me down??

A: I sometimes hear complaints such as these from fellow followers of exercises that involve the ballet barre. I had the same complaint last year when I tried strength work for the first time. Changes in the body usually come in fast when doing Barre3 or Plana Forma so first-time...

Plana Forma: Muscle Over Momentum

Posted by Dior Co on Thursday, February 16, 2012, In : Reviews
So there I was about to get up from bed on New Year's morning, thinking of my resolutions for 2012. I really can't think of any as 2011 has been very very good to me and I feel I've been very very good that year too. However, I looked in the mirror and realized that I might have gained a few inches here and there. My first plan was to continue doing Barre3. It has helped me tone my body, increased my stamina, made me more flexible than ever and strengthened me overall. But it's a new year, an...

Exercising While Sick

Posted by Dior Co on Monday, September 26, 2011, In : Tips
You have been so great about your new exercise routine, rarely missing a day since you started up again. Then all of a sudden you are waylaid by a cold or flu. I hope for your sake that you are able to get through this rainy season untouched. Unfortunately, I caught some cold bug and I'm as frustrated to no end. So what should I do? Should I skip yoga or forsake that Pilates class for a late afternoon nap?

The dilemma: I feel like crap but I feel guilty for not lacing up my shoes and going f...

Stay Motivated to Be Fit

Posted by Dior Co on Tuesday, July 19, 2011, In : Tips
For some reason, a couple of my friends are suddenly jumping into the fitness wagon. I recognize their excitement. The thought of starting a new workout regimen is too exhilarating until you begin your first few sessions and realize that the lean and flab-free body image you have in your head isn't enough motivation to make you want to continue. So here are some tips, based on my humble little experience, to help you stay motivated to power through your work-out

Find the fun in fitness.

Raising the Barre

Posted by Dior Co on Monday, May 2, 2011, In : Reviews
It’s been almost 6 months now since I was first invited to attend a Barre3 session. At that time, I was focusing on my yoga routines and didn’t really think of shifting to Barre3 but tried it anyhow. After an hour of self-inflicted pain, I shrugged it off my shoulders and continued focusing on yoga alone until last month, when I got another invite for another Barre3 session. To be honest, I really didn’t know if it’s wise to permit myself to another struggle, but I just went for it, ...

Lipo for Fat Removal?

Posted by Dior Co on Sunday, March 20, 2011, In : Tips
When a close friend told me yesterday she’s planning to go under the knife for liposuction, the only response I was able to utter was, “Seriously?” Even as someone who’s not against cosmetic surgery, lipo seems to be going way too far. I mean, a bit of snip and snap in the nose or eyelids is fine, but having fat vacuumed out from under the skin? Not only does the recovery period stretch as far, I’ve also heard news about people dying while being operated on the table.

So, to be able...

The Ohm in Yoga

Posted by Dior Co on Thursday, December 16, 2010, In : Reviews
Never athletic, sporty or fit, I've gone through life neglecting the health and fitness aspect of it because I was to lazy to lift a finger. I attempted to improve my body a couple of times in the last few years. I tried a membership to the top gym in the metro in college, badminton after graduation, and swimming after I realized I don't have the patience to gather everybody everytime for a badminton session or inflict myself with pain at the gym. Swimming is the only one I stuck to but I ca...
