Q
: Help! I have bad stretch marks around my hips and stomach. Is there a way to get rid of them?

A: Not entirely, no. But dermatologist treatments can help fade and smooth them. Stretch marks are the result of skin's elastic tissue breaking when it stretches (rapid weight gain and pregnancy are causes), leaving pink, wrinkled skin that gradually becomes a dense, white scar. For newer marks, a derm can prescribe a glycolic acid or a retinoid to lighten the color and improve skin's texture, or perform a more involved process: a series of chemical peels or microdermabrasion. Another option is going through laser treatment, which is more expensive and aggressive and still imperfect. The only way to prevent more from showing up is making sure you maintain a healthy diet and not go on yo-yo dieting.
