It was cute to see Hilary Swank pair an aqua eyeliner with her aqua-colored dress. Today, I just heard that Diane Kruger used to pick out dresses based on whether they would match her signature red lips. While I'm not thinking "will this halter dress go with my favorite shadow?" when shopping, I definitely put thought into how my makeup will jive with the rest of my outfit. "When I want to stand out, I wear vivid orange-red lips—so I have to make sure my clothes balance them. I usually go with a solid-colored dress, like black or navy, or even just a white tee," says Allure beauty director Amy Keller Laird. Like Laird, if the top or dress I want to wear is a crazy shade, I tweak my makeup accordingly, going for neutral lips and smoky bronze or black-lined eyes. For other beauty editors like Angelique Serrano, the fancier the dress, the bolder she goes with her makeup while Heather Muir first decides whether she's feeling casual or dressy that day, then determines her makeup (and clothes) from there. So what goes into deciding your makeup look? Do you choose clothes to match your favorite eye or lip shades?
